A greener America Carbon dioxide emissions in the United States fell to their lowest levels since 1994 last year, with greenhouse gas emissions from the country's power plants having a 4.6 percent drop for 2012 alone. Overall CO2 emissions fell by 13 percent over the past five years as new energy-saving technologies were adopted, including a switch from coal to wind, solar and cleaner-burning natural gas. The figures were released by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. Geothermal and hydroelectric sources also helped reduce air pollution. But America got 31 percent of its energy from natural gas, which came about from an explosion in the use of fracking. Environmental groups say the shattering of the bedrock to help in the extraction of natural gas has come with its own cost to...
The nation's first fleet of cargo trucks fueled by compressed natural gas rolled into service Tuesday in the port complex, adding to a growing list of alternative fuel vehicles competing for business at America's busiest trade gateway. The four rigs, designed and built at a cost of more than $1million, are the latest low-emission big rigs authorities hope will help slash air pollution in the nation's smoggiest region.
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. - America has never had a nationwide limit on mercury and other toxic emissions from coal-fired power plants. That's about to change, though, and it will cost companies such as American Electric Power, which runs the Tanners Creek power station here on the Ohio River, billions of dollars. Tanners Creek represents one side of a split in the American electric power industry. Some industry lobbies and Republicans in the House of Representatives say the nation can't afford the regulation of toxic air pollution from power plants that the Environmental Protection Agency plans to release in December. And American Electric Power says it needs more time.
WASHINGTON - More than 32 mostly coal-fired power plants in a dozen states will be forced to shut down and an additional 36 might have to close because of new federal air pollution regulations, according to an Associated Press survey. Together, those plants - some of the oldest and dirtiest in the country - produce enough electricity for more than 22 million households, the AP survey found. But their demise probably won't cause homes to go dark.

According to estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency, the reductions in carbon pollution required by the legislation will cost American families less than a postage stamp per day. According to the NWF, "The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) offers our country the most important opportunity in generations to jumpstart our economy, create millions of new, well-paying jobs and set the stage for America to compete and win in a 21st century economy while reducing global warming pollution.

AS California's smog-fighting Air Resources Board gets set to impose America's first cap-and-trade rules for fighting the greenhouse gases most scientists believe are helping cause global warming and climate change, it is also considering imposing a "truth" rule on everyone who testifies in its hearings or submits reports to it. For some, that appears a bit ironic right now, as the board has just scaled back diesel particulate pollution regulations that were based on a report whose lead author turned out to have falsified his academic credentials. Before the changes, those regulations had already cost truckers and operators of industrial machinery big money as they struggled to clean up their engines.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is granting the California Air Resources Board's (CARB's) request for a waiver of Clean Air Act preemption to enforce its Advanced Clean Car (ACC) regulations. The ACC combines the control of smog and soot causing pollutants and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into a single coordinated package of requirements for passenger cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles (and limited requirements related to heavy-duty vehicles). The ACC program includes revisions to California's Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) program as well as its Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program. By today's decision, EPA has also determined that CARB's amendments to the ZEV program as they affect 2017 and prior model years (MYs) are within the scope of previous waivers...
