  • LOS ANGELES, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As the economy begins to show signs of recovery and pressure returns on nurse wages, attrition, and labor availability, hospital executives face the challenge of managing labor costs and scarce clinical personnel while managing patient care. KPMG LLP recently conducted a study that explores how hospital executives view their use of full-time and supplemental labor in the current economy. The study addresses hospitals' views on quality of patient care, direct employee labor costs, and temporary nurse usage. KPMG's 2011 U.S. Hospital Nursing Labor Costs Study, which is based on a survey of 120 senior hospital executives throughout the United States, provides labor cost benchmarks useful in labor model analysis.

  • John Leyden, the VP of Packaging and Distribution at Rodney Strong Vineyards, wrestled with the issue of cork taint -- a widespread quality problem that ruins a significant percentage of wine. Cork taint is a defect that can be eliminated by using alternative closures, such as screw caps or plastic corks, instead of natural cork. Product development decisions require marketing, production, quality control, and purchasing to work together to find a solution. Suppliers should also be included to provide technical information and suggest solutions. The issue boils down to a choice between the technical superiority of one closure or consumer preference for a popular but inferior closure. Leyden gathered critical information from suppliers and colleagues to help him make the decision. Possib...

  • Eliminating unemployment is a complex process, as any effort to achieve full employment would trigger inflation. The Buffer Stock Employment (BSE) model is proposed as a strategy of achieving full employment that guarantees price stability. A cost analysis of the performance of the BSE in the UK, US and Australia shows that BSE causes a low dent on the gross domestic product. Moreover, an increase in unemployment is attributed to low budget deficits, thereby making the problem a macroeconomic concern.

  • A model of frivolous litigation based on game theory suggests that asymmetric information increases the likelihood of frivolous suits. When the plaintiff does not know that the suit lacks merit, failure to investigate is the factor that makes the suit frivolous. Frivolous suits have an indirect cost in that they make it more difficult to settle legitimate cases. Judicial screening offers a promising method of enforcement. The analysis of frivolous litigation demonstrates the usefulness of game theory for procedural analysis.

  • John Leyden, the Vice President of Packaging and Distribution at Rodney Strong Vineyards, wrestled with the issue of cork taint - a widespread quality problem that ruins a significant percentage of wine. Cork taint causes moldy, musty aromas that affect perhaps up to 10% of wine produced worldwide. Contamination can lead to customer alienation and ultimately lost sales. Cork taint is a defect that can be eliminated by using alternative closures, such as screw caps or plastic corks, instead of natural cork. From a quality viewpoint, the best solution is a screw cap, which offers the advantages of a durable, long-lasting seal, which can be resealed after the bottle has been opened. However, this solution has been rejected in the marketplace because cork is perceived as a high quality clos...

  • In this article, the traditional cost-volume-profit (CVP) model is expanded to incorporate the cost of capital. Using the principles of activity-based costing, the opportunity cost of invested funds is traced to a product and is used to determine its operating income after taxes less the cost of capital or economic income each period. When a product's economic income over its useful life is discounted to when production will begin, it is equivalent to a product's net present value (NPV) (see Hartman, 2000; Shrieves and Wachowicz, 2001). The NPV equation, or model, developed in this manner is based on accounting, rather than cash flow, variables. Consequently, it provides a framework for performing CVP analysis. As demonstrated in the article, the CVP model incorporating the cost of capi...
