This study empirically explores the role of corruption, and the impact of China joining the WTO in 2001 on inward foreign direct investment (FDI) in Malaysia. From the empirical tests, this study suggests:- (1) FDI and its determinants are cointegrated; (2) Openness, interest rate, inflation rate, the joining of China into the WTO, and the level of corruption are the major determinants explaining inward FDI in Malaysia, both in the long-run as well as short- run. In general, these findings do provide the policymakers with empirical information about the policy formation on the variables those stimulating FDI in Malaysia.

Runaway corruption in China, says a compelling new report, poses a lethal threat to the nation's economic development and "undermines the legitimacy of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.
Evidence from official audits, press articles and law enforcement data, the report says, indicates that "corruption in China is both pervasive and costly." Bribery, kickbacks, theft and fraud, particularly by party and government officials, are said to be rampant.

More than a half-billion dollars meant for tackling water pollution in Chinese rivers and lakes has been embezzled or misused, seriously undercutting pollution prevention efforts and raising questions about how pervasive corruption is in China's environmental programs, a new report shows.
The report, by China's National Auditing Office (NAO), revealed that from 2001 to 2007, about $59 million in funding for water pollution control and prevention efforts involving three major rivers and three major lake areas was embezzled by officials and departments in those regions. In addition, $661 million was stolen, misdirected or never used.
