[Brian Walsby]'s band. Double Negative, will open for the Melvins and Big Business Saturday, Aug. 16, at Cat's Cradle. "I'm looking forward to that, but I think we're also kind of nervous, or at least I am," says Walsby. "I want to pander to them." Double Negative also plays with Polvo at the Cradle Sunday, Aug. 17, in a benefit for Cy Rawls.
Walsby stumbled into a job with the Melvins in much the same way he met the band 22 years ago-by accident. He moved here from California after becoming pen pals with Raleigh's Corrosion of Conformity. The Melvins crashed with C.O.C.'s Reed Mullen after their first show in the state on a humid July night in 1986. Walsby lived just down the street. By the end of the band's Chapel Hill set, Walsby-a C.O.C. and Black Flag fan who treasured punk rock th...

Through the sound of a world drowning in industrial poison, they set fire to hippie communes and embrace Brooklyn's filth viscerally-not just with instruments but, if need be, with strongdrink and drugs. The former is the hometown of mastermind/lead guitarist Light (a/k/a Sean Livingston); in the '80s, Raleigh gave birth to both the pummeling dis- tortion of Corrosion of Conformity and the more technically mutated rhythms of Confessor, bands that would come to play a role in both Pollution's drum sound and guitar work.

If you've been craving some serious rock riffage that fits somewhere between Mudhoney and Queens of the Stone Age, you won't want to miss Nebula on Tuesday at The Blue Note. This Los Angeles power trio just put out their fourth album, "Apollo," a cocktail of heavy riffs, electrified blues, jammy space rock and psychedelic freak-outs.
Nebula formed in 1997 after vocalist/guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano left desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu. They went on to release two albums and three EPs with Sub Pop and toured with the likes of Nashville Pussy, Mudhoney, Corrosion of Conformity and The Hellacopters.

His arrival in North Carolina in 1986 would further meld his life to his passion for music. The airport taxi dropped him off at 115 Ashe Ave., the place where Scott Williams-who [Brian Walsby] now calls "the self-proclaimed leader of the scene and one of the funniest guys I know"-lived. Williams and Walsby had begun a correspondence one year before, when Williams mailed the California zine artist a copy of a Triangle rag. But Walsby's ties to North Carolina were already strong: He was a pen pal of Corrosion of Conformity's Woody Weatherman and No Labels' Ricky Hicks, and a split between C.O.C., No Labels, Bloodmobile and Stillborn Christians was one of his prized 7-inch records. After he visited the state in 1985, he knew he would soon be back permanently.

Luckier still, Century Media bought out Now or Never and already had an awareness of Brand New Sin's bluesy-metal approach. After the band parted ways with guitarist [Brian "Slider" Azzoto] in March 2004, the current five-piece lineup signed with Century Media last November. "Century Media came and saved the day," [Joe Altier] says. "We met most of the staff, the management, the directors. They're our fans. They want to go to a show and mosh in the pit.
That's okey-dokey with this band, however, as their years of musicianship seem to be finally paying off. "As a whole in this scene I don't see the determination to work at it," admits Altier. "{Other bands are} expecting people to show up out of nowhere. They don't even know who the hell you are."
