Distance learning is getting a lot of positive buzz in Maine higher education circles, primarily because it will allow students of all ages and means to complete coursework at any hour of the day from their homes in Monson, Eastport, Patten or Skowhegan. PRESQUE ISLE - , 96, died Oct. 25, 2011, surrounded by his children, after a long and full life with many friends. He was born June 6, 1915, in Sherman Station, son of Spurgeon and Nellie (Robinson) Naas. Steve graduated from Sherman High School in 1934 during the heart of the Depression. As work was hard to find, in October 1934 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked as part of the forestry department on road construction in New Hampshire until August 1936. Thomas F. O'Connor, of Hamburg, a retired supervisor at American Standard, died last Wednesday in Ridgeview Manor Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was 85. Born in Buffalo, he was a 1942 graduate of Seneca Vocational High School and earned a degree in electrical engineering from International Correspondence School.
