NEW YORK, Aug. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Ford Foundation today announced a grant of $500,000 to the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta (ECD) for an ambitious new program to provide financial counseling services to low-income homeowners in Mississippi who are rebuilding after last year's hurricanes.

The city is finalizing its long-awaited Fresh Food Retail Initiative, a program that took root but never blossomed during the Nagin administration.
The idea is to use federal recovery dollars to disperse low- interest and forgivable loans to qualified grocers who open stores in underserved areas. A collaboration between the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta and Hope Community Credit Union will underwrite the loans and screen applicants. ECD/Hope Senior Vice President Gary Williams said a final deal could come next week. Aimee Quirk, Mayor Mitch Landrieu's economic development adviser, said she hopes the deal will be finalized by the end of the month.
