The increase in the number of wells penetrating shale formations has cracked open another market - the need for saltwater disposal wells. Records from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission indicate the amount of water from these wells is increasing in the state.
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission has voiced opposition to a controversial new Environmental Protection Agency plan that would force three Oklahoma coal-fired power plants to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 95 percent in three years. The proposed EPA plan will cost Oklahoma utility companies more than a billion dollars to implement and would cause huge rate hikes for Oklahoma consumers, Oklahoma Corporation Commission Chairwoman Dana Murphy said.
As the Environmental Protection Agency continues its investigation into whether hydraulic fracturing is polluting the nation's drinking water, members of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission are publicly speaking out against federal regulation of oil and natural gas drilling. Commissioner and Vice Chairman Jeff Cloud was in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to testify during a U.S. Senate committee hearing on natural gas drilling.
Many Oklahomans, if they think of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission at all, believe the cases heard at the commission are fairly insignificant, and, frankly just not that interesting or important. Nothing could be further from the truth," said Curtis Johnson, deputy administrative law judge at the Eastern Regional Service Office in Tulsa.
Oklahoma Corporation Commission Chairwoman Dana Murphy has traveled 33,000 miles across the state to speak at 710 events, not counting political ones. But she has not lost any passion for the job during her two years and 363 days as a commissioner. She has served as head of what she called the three-headed monster for one year.
Following Wednesday's ruling by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, electric rates charged by Public Service Company of Oklahoma will increase less than 1 percent for commercial and residential customers while declining for industrial users. Under the proposal OK'd by the commission, residential customers will see a 0.45-percent increase - or 35 cents a month - for 1,000 kilowatt-hours of use, said Stan Whiteford, PSO spokesman.
Two bills introduced Monday in the Oklahoma Legislature would expand the Oklahoma Corporation Commission's powers to regulate natural gas and oil pipelines in the state. Both bills arose out of complaints from landowners about the lack of authority the regulatory agency has over pipeline maintenance and safety standards.
OKLAHOMA CITY - New regulations for Oklahoma's moving companies mean more information and protection for the customer whose worldly possessions are being hauled to a new place. The rules went into effect July 1, 2010, but Oklahoma's Corporation Commission, which regulates intrastate transportation of household goods, is still contacting companies to ensure they know how to become compliant.
Oklahoma Corporation Commission chairman Bob Anthony said Thursday that ratepayers have more to fear from AT&T's recent pattern of rate hikes and legislation that could further deregulate the telecommunications industry than they do a statewide toll-free calling plan. Nevertheless, Anthony joined commissioners Dana Murphy and Jeff Cloud in voting to suspend a March 29 hearing date until Jan. 19, 2011, because, as Anthony said, "it will take people that long to calm down about this notion that this was a $3 tax on their phone bill.
