State courts tend to follow their federal counterparts in favoring defendants in appeals of civil cases, according to a new study by two Cornell University Law School professors.

A federal judge has tapped Hofstra Law School Dean Aaron Twerski to help straighten up one of the messier arenas of litigation to come out of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Some 11,000 workers who took part in the Ground Zero cleanup effort have filed claims of respiratory illness, and a judge has asked Twerski, along with a Cornell Law School professor, to organize the cases. The presiding judge said Twerski's work could prevent the cases from stretching on for generations.
