Balt. City Council OKs Hyatt resolutionThe Baltimore City Council has approved a resolution urging the Hyatt Regency Baltimore hotel to stop hiring contracted workers through staffing companies and to sign a "labor peace" agreement with employees that says the hotel will not interfere with unionization efforts. The council unanimously backed the non-binding resolution on Monday. The hotel is owned by the city and was built in the 1970s on city-owned land as part of the redevelopment of the Inner Harbor. Unite Here Local 7, the labor union that spearheaded the effort to bring the resolution to the council, said employees objected to the hotel's practice of using subcontracted workers to perform core functions at the hotel.

The Supreme Court on Jan. 11, for the first time recognized a ministerial exception to employment discrimination laws, saying that churches and other religious groups must be free to choose and dismiss their leaders without government interference. The decision gave only limited guidance about who counts as a minister, not wanting to adopt a rigid formula. The ruling will have concrete consequences for employees of religious groups who perform religious work.

JACKSON - Mississippi's highways and lakes could go unpatrolled over the busy July 4 weekend if Gov. Haley Barbour and state legislators fail to adopt a state budget by Wednesday, state Atty. Gen. Jim Hood warned Thursday.
Hood said he will issue an opinion today that spells out in broad terms that only those officials named in the state constitution, those who perform core functions required by the state constitution or those required by federal mandate would continue working without a budget for the 2010 fiscal year that begins Wednesday.
