Los centavos se veían sucios porque estaban cubiertos de un compuesto llamado bronce de óxido (copper oxide). Entonces, el ácido o la solución de sal y vinagre los lavó. Pero solos, los centavos lavados con agua parecen brillosos, porque el dejar la sal y el vinagre en bronce por mucho tiempo al aire libre hace que el oxígeno en el aire reaccione químicamente con el clorito de la sal. Por eso, los centavos se miran azulesverdes en vez de brillosos. ¡Interesante! Así mismo, los ingenieros en electricidad y computación usan elementos como el bronce para crear los circuitos dentro de tu calculadora o tu lámpara.
Sometime in 1853, Brigham Young sat down to have his picture taken. Not much is known about the exact sitting, but picture- taking in those days, using the method invented by Frenchman Louis Daguerre some 14 years earlier, was rather a clunky process. It involved coating a copper plate with silver oxide, exposing it at length to the image being captured, developing it in a mercury bath and then removing the remaining silver oxide with a warm solution of cooking salt.
