Tax executives are concerned about state tax auditors' requests for copies of tax returns filed with other states, which are mainly irrelevant due to state tax law differences. Various states have or have not adopted to varying degrees the Multistate Tax Commission's Regulations and UDITPA, resulting in variations in treatment of business and non-business income and in apportionment of income. Looking to other states' tax returns is a waste of taxpayers' and state auditors' resources.
