Bye-bye, Kinko's. Consumers who still think of FedEx Kinko's as the new name of Kinko's Copies now have to give up the old name for good.
Hidden behind legal briefs and the Restatement (Second) of Torts, an awful lot of lawyers have a Harry Potter novel or seven tucked away. That shouldn't be too surprising, given that the series has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide. But now there is proof, in the form of a recent book co-edited by Jeffrey E. Thomas, an assistant dean at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, that lawyers take Harry Potter very, very seriously.
NEW YORK - From the White House to the Schein house, Passover is good to the last drop thanks to the Maxwell House Haggadah, lovingly passed down through generations, red wine splotches and gravy smears marking nearly 80 years of service at American Seder tables. The coffee company's version of the text used at the holiday meal has been offered free at supermarkets with a Maxwell House purchase since the early 1930s. Now, more than 50 million copies are in print.
For historians, genealogists and everyday folk who appreciate well-told stories about the past, the Civil War offers a wealth of original source material, especially in the form of letters written by soldiers to those back home. In the 1980s, Jack and Maurita Orendorff loaned the McLean County Museum of History 70 some letters written by Pvt. William H. Horine of the 94th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The museum transcribed the letters, and the typed copies are now part of its sizable collection of Civil War correspondence.
Did he or didn't he...have knowledge of former Mayor John Pomierski's bad behavior? One moment our newly "self-appointed" mayor is confident that he and City Council members under the former mayor had no knowledge of any wrongdoing and the next, he's saying he's not surprised, it's the reason he ran for mayor in 2004 and 2008 and now worse yet, he has copies of checks and a contract?! For crying out loud, would the population of Upland wake up? All of the council members under former Mayor Pomierski (with the exception of newly elected Councilman Filippi), frankly, should be removed. They've all stated repeatedly they had no knowledge, were shocked, disappointed, yada, yada, yada. However, it's without a doubt there will be details that surface stating otherwise. You simply can't have a...
All right, it is gone, into the mail (or more likely into cyberspace, as an electronic filing) this past week. And may we never have to look at our filed copies of "2010" again. Between now and April of next year, there is always a snowball's chance the income tax will become simpler. Who wouldn't want that?
Living up to its title, Bill Forsyth's "Comfort and Joy" was a welcome, gladdening new Christmas classic when it arrived in 1984. It appears to be aging gracefully a generation later, although Universal has been negligent about confirming this humorous- inspirational durability by adding a DVD edition to the American market. Evidently, one has been in circulation in the United Kingdom for a number of years. Perhaps the 25th anniversary would be an appropriate time to let American admirers update aging VHS copies. Now 62 and reportedly contemplating a belated return to feature filmmaking, Mr. Forsyth is a native of Glasgow, Scotland, the location of his first two pictures, "That Sinking Feeling" and "Gregory's Girl," and then his fourth, "Comfort and Joy.
Taylor Swift fans have spoken - more than a million times. The country-pop superstar sold more than 1 million copies of her new album, Speak Now , to debut at the top of the Billboard album chart this week. Billboard.com said Wednesday that it's the biggest debut since 50 Cent's The Massacre five years ago.
RIPLEY - Earlier this week, Aniket Zinzuwadia, of Beckley, and his fellow students learned about the pros and cons of wind turbines. In the morning, they considered how to design and build wind turbine blades to produce the most power. The students considered the blades angle, weight, length and width, shape, position and materials to build it. Unfortunately, the turbines also kill birds and bats, Zinzuwadia noted. It was pretty fun, he said. I learned a lot. Zinzuwadia is among 77 rising 10th-graders from 38 counties at the first West Virginia Youth Science Camp at Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley. The camp is geared toward high school students who show an aptitude in the STEM fields science, technology, engineering and math. The curriculum is modeled after the National Youth...
