BONN, Germany -- The United States gave a spirited defense Friday of the threadbare agreement reached in Copenhagen against a barrage of criticism that the deal was struck by "a select few" that cast doubt on its legitimacy.
Differences were striking as countries began the first round of climate talks since the disappointing summit in the Danish capital in December, which yielded a result far short of the goal set two years earlier of a new agreement to control greenhouse gases blamed for raising the Earth's average temperature.

For the last three days of the conference, an ad appears from the Advocates from Environmental Human Rights in New Orleans (www.ehumanrights.org). They urge the President to take 10 key steps to protect our human right to live in a healthy environment. This is a message that supports President [Obama] and reminds why a climate change treaty is important. We know that President Obama knows how and why to do the right thing. And we knowthat his ratings have plummeted because he is not superman. He can't do everything, not given the political realities. He moves the agenda forward, and he deserves applause for that.

PRESQUE ISLE - As world leaders join together at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, to try to formulate a plan to battle global warming, two books by the president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle are adding to the discussion.
Don Zillman, who has been president of the university since 2006, was invited to contribute a blog post for the Oxford University Press Web site summarizing the key predictions of a book he co- edited, "Beyond the Carbon Economy: Energy Law in Transition." The "Countdown to Copenhagen" post appeared Dec. 3.
