To accomplish a joint mission of ensuring public safety through information sharing, NICS works in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice; the U.S. Immigra- tion and Customs Enforce- ment; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Ex- plosives; point-of-contact states (those coordinating their own state's background checks); and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

The subject was grim but the timing was spot on: Last week, local officials had a symposium on coordinating services for the poor on the same day that the U.S. Census Bureau announced that the official poverty rate for 2009 was 14.3 percent - the highest in 15 years.
The national poverty line for last year was set at nearly $22,000 for a family of four and slightly less than $11,000 for an individual. This counts only monetary income, and not such government aid as food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit. But it's still bleak news when one in seven Americans can't get across such a low income threshold.

James H. "Chip" Burrus, who has headed the FBI's criminal investigative division in an acting capacity since February, has been named as its permanent chief, responsible for coordinating, managing and directing the bureau's criminal investigative programs nationwide.
Chip brings an extensive background in criminal investigations and great leadership qualities to the [assistant director] position," said FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III.
