THE BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the nuclear accident in Japan have focused attention on the perils of relying on conventional energy sources that could affect our safety, environment and national security. These events increased interest in clean, renewable energy sources, including solar and wind. Until the cost of these sources of energy reaches "grid parity" -- meaning that their cost is comparable to electricity generated from conventional sources -- their development will require public incentives. My company, SunLight General Capital, is a solar energy developer and financier focused on the Northeast. We are installing a 200- kilowatt rooftop solar system at Ansonia High School. We will own the system, which will provide long-term, low-cost, on-site electricity.
The United States EPA is proposing new source performance standards for emissions of carbon dioxide (CO<INF>2</INF>) for new affected fossil fuel-fired electric utility generating units (EGUs). The EPA is proposing these requirements because CO<INF>2</INF> is a greenhouse gas (GHG) and fossil fuel-fired power plants are the country's largest stationary source emitters of GHGs. The EPA in 2009 found that by causing or contributing to climate change, GHGs endanger both the public health and the public welfare of current and future generations. The proposed requirements, which are strictly limited to new sources, would require new fossil fuel-fired EGUs greater than 25 megawatt electric (MWe) to meet an output-based standard of 1,000 pounds of CO<INF>2</INF...

Anti-nuclear hysteria threatens to displace global-warming fear as the preeminent environmental phobia of our time. Real events have a way of intruding on ideological blueprints, so activist greens are now faced with the prospect of choosing which fear is most dear to them. Horror stories about a new Chernobyl and radiation escaping from Japan's Fukushima atomic reactors are causing leftist unity to melt down. The liberal political agenda to scale back nuclear power is gathering steam as elevated levels of radiation plague the land and sea surrounding Japan's tsunami-devastated nuclear-power plants. Given the high cost of renewable-energy sources, conventional fossil fuels like coal are getting a second look. Nations that go that route, however, are likely to place current carbon-emissi...

According to the Energy Information Administration, excluding conventional hydropower, renewable sources now comprise a mere 2.5% of the nation's electricity mix, whereas coal, natural gas, and nuclear make up nearly 90%. According to the Posf, the 14term former lawmaker (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 74%) "sponsored $60 million in earmarks last year, steering at least $9 million in federal money to campaign donors.
Solar-energy stock prices have been falling for about two years. Once viewed as the newest and greenest energy source, solar power has become less popular with investors. They gradually realized that it is far from competitive with conventional energy sources on price, and that it accounts for less than 1 percent of U.S. electricity generation.
If future generations could vote on how foundations invest their money today, would they choose the current allocation? Byron Swift, chair and executive director of the World Land Trust, suggested this thought experiment to me, and I am disturbed to find that my answer is no. Human-caused climate change, sharply declining conventional energy sources, and population growth are threatening the very platform of human life. Yet fully two-thirds of US foundation spending goes to current human health and well-being, and seven of the 10 largest US foundations concentrate on human health or the arts, according to the Foundation Center's latest statistics (from 2004). The world's second largest foundation (Stichting Ingka, the IKEA fortune) focuses on interior design. Meanwhile, only 5% of US fo...
Why do we now use the conventional energy sources we do instead of the popular "green" ones now being proposed? I became aware of the green ones 30 years ago while involved in energy research. Green energy sources may be more desirable, but they will not be less costly than what we now use. Ralph Horton
