The Allegheny County Controller's and Treasurer's offices are being contested for the first time since 2003. Controller Mark Patrick Flaherty's decision to step down after eight years set the stage for a race between State Rep. Chelsa Wagner, a Democrat, and former PPG executive Bob Howard, a Republican. Incumbent Treasurer John Weinstein, a Democrat first elected in 1999, will face former Alcoa executive Ned Pfeifer, a Republican, in the Nov. 8 election.
A White House plane carrying Michelle Obama came dangerously close to a 200-ton military cargo jet and had to abort its landing at Joint Base Andrews on Monday as the result of an air traffic controller's mistake, according to federal officials familiar with the incident. Controllers at Andrews feared the cargo jet would not clear the runway in time for Mrs. Obama's plane to land, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Citing multiple concerns over Montebello's delinquent financial reporting to the state and recent revelations about its precarious finances and questionable activities, Chiang, in an unusual move, has turned his focus on the city of 65,000 residents.
