LA JOLLA, Calif., Jan. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The State of the Union address on January 25 is the opportunity to focus the national agenda on what Americans care about most: jobs. That's according to a study published in a new book: Closing America's Job Gap by Mary Walshok, Tapan Munroe and Henry DeVries (W Business Books, January 2011).
Unless President Obama and the new Congress can fully commit to stimulating start-up companies that create good jobs and invest in retraining to retain good jobs, the nation will lose its global competitiveness," says Walshok, a sociologist who has done research for the U.S. Department of Labor and the dean of continuing education at the University of California San Diego (http:// extension.ucsd.edu).

[Cindy Thompson], a CalWORKs job developer for Continuing Education students, reported that she was able to help [Edith Espinoza] land a job as an administrative assistant for the Chicano Federation of San Diego County in November 2007. Edith was just recently given a six-month extension - and a raise, Thompson happily reported.
In December 2006, Edith arrived at the El Nido shelter with nothing but her two daughters and the clothes on their backs, according to El Nido spokesperson Francisca Jinesta. Shortly after taking refuge at the shelter, Edith enrolled at Continuing Education's Mid City Campus. Her career goal is to become a Child Development professional.
