The state Regional Jail Authority late Thursday asked the state Supreme Court to overturn a circuit judge's arrest of three correctional officers earlier in the day - because the officers were late delivering inmates to his courtroom.
According to the petition, Mingo Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury had Southwestern Regional Jail correctional officers Anthony Elkins and Zachary Bassham arrested on contempt of court charges Thursday morning, because they were late bringing inmates from the jail for court arraignments.

TULSA, Okla. - A federal judge on Monday found the Cherokee Nation in contempt of court for missing a deadline to notify roughly 1,200 descendants of black slaves once owned by the Oklahoma tribe's members that they could vote in a special election for their chief.
S. District Judge Henry H. Kennedy already allowed attorneys for the tribe and the black descendants, known as freedmen, to hatch a deal in Washington D.C. last week to extend balloting for Saturday's special election until Oct. 8 so that those qualified to vote can be notified and participate.

Former members of Massey Energy's board of directors will have to explain why they shouldn't be held in contempt of court for not taking steps to improve the company's safety performance prior to the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster.
A Kanawha County judge has issued an order that requires lawyers for those board members to make their case during a hearing scheduled for late October.

A divorced mother who baptized her children without consulting their father may be cited for criminal contempt, the Tennessee Court of Appeals has ruled in reversing judgment.
The parties had two young children when they divorced in 2010. Under the terms of the divorce decree, "major decisions" regarding "religious upbringing" were to be made jointly. When the parties couldn't agree as to the age at which their children should be baptized, the mother had the children baptized without the father's knowledge or consent.

The San Bernardino County grand jury on Tuesday served Rancho Cucamonga Councilman Rex Gutierrez with a contempt-of-court order for disclosing information to a reporter about its inquiry into a potential land deal.
In April, Gutierrez said he met with members of the grand jury, who asked about the potential sale of a 1,200-acre parcel of land north of the 210 Freeway. Specifically, the grand jury wanted to know whether Rancho Cucamonga developer Jeff Burum and his company, Diversified Pacific, were getting preferential treatment.

Colorado Springs anti-tax activist Douglas Bruce was cited for contempt of court Wednesday after a Denver judge found cause to believe that Bruce disobeyed a court order and obstructed justice.
A hearing in the contempt case is set for July 26 in Denver. Bruce could be ordered to pay fines and court costs for not appearing at a campaign finance proceeding before an administrative court last month.
