Counterfeiting, which has always been somewhat of a problem in several different industry settings, has recently become an epidemic in the fashion industry. Widespread and seemingly endless counterfeiting of fashion goods is costing the industry millions of dollars in lost profits and tarnishing the image of many luxury brands. This article reviews definitions of counterfeiting and antecedents of consumers' purchases of counterfeit goods and examines counterfeiting's impact on both the industry and the economy. Suggestions are offered with the goal of educating consumers regarding the issues raised by such consumption behaviors.

NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The consumer staples analysts at S&P Equity Research see a mixed picture for the sector in 2011, but believe the sector has defensive appeal when compared to other more economically sensitive sectors. The newly operational Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has issued its first interim rule which it says will fill a regulatory gap in the mortgage industry.
The new rule, published in the Federal Register, allows state- chartered mortgage lenders to offer alternative mortgages under the federal Alternative Mortgage Transaction Parity Act of 1982, rather than under state law. The rule is effective immediately.
