Spring is obviously a busy time at Bill Duesing's modest farm in Oxford, but the key ingredient here is something you don't see. That would be the Big O, as in organic. At dozens of farms around the state, the organic influence is an agricultural strategy, a marketing approach and a way of life.
We've seen a huge consumer demand for organic food," says Duesing, a longtime organic farmer who operates Old Solar Farm. He's also spokesman for the Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association.

YAKIMA, Wash. - It comes as no surprise to anyone that the number of organic farms is booming to meet consumer demand for healthy food. In Washington, a state known more for its apples than any other crop, there are 45 organic dairies. Five years ago, there were just two.
The challenge has been feeding all those cows.

This proposed rule would address a recommendation submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture (Secretary) by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) on April 29, 2011. The recommendation pertains to the 2012 Sunset Review of the listing for nutrient vitamins and minerals on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List). As recommended by the NOSB, the proposed rule would continue the exemption (use) for nutrient vitamins and minerals for 5 years after the October 21, 2012 sunset date. In addition, the proposed rule would amend the annotation to correct an inaccurate cross reference to U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations (FDA). Increasingly health-conscious consumers have helped cultivate demand in recent years for a bumper crop of organic foods. According to a study by the Organic Trade Association, US sales of organic food and nonfood products reached $24.6 billion in 2008, 17.1% above 2007 levels. Organic Valley formerly used Sage SalesLogix, and consumer relations manager Kim Rundle recalls struggling to get real-time information for both quality and reporting purposes. Due to budget constraints, any selection also had to be quick to deploy and cost-effective. It was mid-2008 when Rundle turned to RightNow Technologies, a vendor of on-demand solutions. Rundle's team generates reports based on customer insight to identify potential hot-button issues.
