Minimally invasive spine surgery isn't new to Oklahoma, but the arrival of Laser Spine Institute gives the procedure a decidedly relaxing approach.
Laser Spine Institute (LSI) recently opened a consultation center in Oklahoma City, where potential patients can find out, for free, if they're candidates for endoscopic, or minimally invasive spine surgery. If they are, they go out of state to one of the company's surgery centers in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Tampa, Fla.; and Philadelphia. Patients often stay in nearby resorts and combine a medical procedure with a vacation.

If all those TV personalities can do it, so can I, I figure as I make an appointment for a colonoscopy, then decide to tell you about it. (Lucky for you I'm not a TV personality, otherwise, you would have to put up with accompanying visuals.)
First, there's a consultation with the surgeon who will perform what is delicately called "the procedure." I like him, which is important when you have someone looking at, well, you know. Dr. Johnson reviews the "colonoscopy instructions" with me, boldly circling the important ones - like drinking LOTS of fluids after downing Fleet Phospho-Soda the evening before the procedure. And let's not forget, "applying a protective layer of Vaseline on your buttocks to avoid irritation." Doc can't seem to stress this enough. Alrighty then.

If you think your relationship is a bit dysfunctional, just wait until you hear the tale of this completely messed up couple in Congquing, China. Exhibit A: Zhao Gang, 32, who lost his first wife in a car accident three years ago. After constant pressure from his family to remarry, Zhao finally found a woman who looked enough like his old wife to fit the bill. "I got married only because she looks a bit like her," said Zhao. If that isn't psychologically unstable enough, Zhao has now convinced his new wife to have plastic surgery in order to try to make her identical to his first wife. Which brings us to Exhibit B: Cai, a woman of such shockingly low self-esteem that she agreed to the procedure. "I feel conflicted. I don't want to become another's shadow, but I also don't want to lose t...

Why haven't CECs succeeded in empowering parents? Two reasons. First, CECs depend entirely upon the Department of Education (DOE) for their training, support and resources. This creates an inevitable conflict of interest because DOE can't be expected to effectively promote independent criticism of its own proposals. And second, while state law requires CEC approval or consultation on various decisions, it provides no clear guidance on how this process should occur.
It doesn't have to be this way. In contrast with CECs, New York City's community boards have served for decades as well-established venues for community input. Instead of being dependent upon the mayor, community boards have borough presidents to train and support them. And the city charter gives community boards clear proces...
