  • Q: At the end of this month I will be receiving my performance review for the past year. In the past I have always had trouble listening to criticism about myself, and I tend to get defensive. I understand now that these reviews are done as a learning tool and I need to be more receptive. Do you have any tips that will allow me to receive feedback constructively? A: Most people will go out of their way to defend against criticism and spend unproductive time worrying about what others think of them. Research shows that improvements in productivity depend upon accurate criticism delivered constructively. Here are some tips that will allow you to respond well and accept constructive feedback.

  • Dear Dr. Elia, I grew up in a very critical home and it has really impacted my life and especially my self-esteem. What troubles me is the fact that my parents would always say that they were giving us "constructive criticism" because they wanted us to be better. If we didn't like it, they would say that we were being disobedient and disrespectful. The funny thing is that sometimes what they would say was the truth, but because I felt criticized I just didn't care. I would totally shut down, or just ignore them. Now that I'm a parent with little kids, I want to be sure that I don't repeat some of the same patterns. What are you thoughts on constructive criticism? Is that ever ok?

  • MALA has three goals: (1) to foster public discourse by offering more pluralistic views on hemispheric affairs, (2) to offer constructive media criticism together with civic participation tools for acting on that criticism, and (3) to mobilize our diverse constituencies to become active in the media justice movement. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting made the point that matters: "Were a similar event to happen in the U.S., and TV journalists and executives were caught conspiring with coup plotters, it's doubtful they would stay out of jail, let alone be allowed to continue to run television stations, as they have in Venezuela.

"That only means he likes you, in his own weird way," said Gay, a sophomore forward for the University of Connecticut men's basketball team. "He wants perfection. If you practice it, you'll get used to it. Heading into top-ranked UConn's matchup with Seton Hall on Saturday night, Gay had averaged 18.6 points on 54-percent shooting and 8.0 rebounds over his last five games.

  • In an international search for musical talent, only 17 people were chosen to go to London to conduct an orchestra composed of some of the world's finest musicians. Manuel Aybar of San Bernardino, was one of just three Americans selected to participate. After years of soul-searching and exploring the world, Aybar returned to San Bernardino to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional conductor. And this summer has brought him closer than ever to fulfilling that dream.

  • How skilled are you at delivering constructive feedback? If you manage employees, the answer better be good. Otherwise, your business may suffer. Experts offer a simple premise. Do a good job of delivering the message and employees feel inspired to enhance their skills and further the goals of the organization. Do a bad job and the opposite holds true; employees feel dejected and pass on that negativity to other associates - and, ultimately, your customers.

  • On Steve Scauzillo's column about journalism: In the spirit of O'Shea's admonition that the community get involved with its newspaper with constructive criticism, I'd like to criticize his notion that publicly funded journalism is "worth a try. First, even leaving cost out of the equation, getting the government deeper into subsidizing journalism is the most abysmally bad idea I've heard in a long time. I'd rather get my local news from people rambling on Facebook.
