LONG BEACH -- The city council will consider delaying the plastic bag ban by one month for larger retailers at tonight's meeting.
Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal, 2nd District, is sponsoring the delay of the ban, initially scheduled to begin Aug. 1, despite word from affected retailers such as Target that they are prepared to begin on time.

CLAREMONT - The City Council tonight will consider an amendment to ban smoking in some of the city's public places.
The ban would prohibit smoking in outdoor dining areas, outdoor pub/ bar patios, clubs, waiting lines or within 20 feet of lines, hotel common areas, Village Plaza, Farmers Market and outdoor public gathering places for planned events.

An anti-tobacco group is expected to formally ask Olive Branch aldermen on Tuesday to outlaw smoking in public places within the city.
The local chapter of the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition will make a presentation in support of an ordinance banning smoking in places like restaurants.

Town of Brookfield - The Town Board tonight will consider imposing a temporary ban on redevelopment of land between I-94 and Blue Mound Road to prepare and adopt a master plan for land use and transportation.
The length of the moratorium was not known Monday. Town Administrator Rick Czopp said he likely would recommend a six-month moratorium that could be extended if necessary.
