WASHINGTON, June 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Late last week, the Inter- American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) adopted an international ban on shark finning in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The lucrative market for "shark fin soup" is the driving force behind finning -- the practice of slicing off a shark's fin and dumping the rest of the body back into the ocean. The Shark Resolution, which also aims to improve information about sharks in IATTC fisheries, was co- sponsored by the United States, the European Union, Japan and Nicaragua and received vocal support from Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Mexico. AUGUSTA - As momentum builds in Washington, D.C., for federal regulation of greenhouse gases, Maine is preparing to dole out millions of dollars in grants collected as part of the nation's first regional "carbon market. Maine has collected more than $15 million so far from the sale of pollution "credits" under the 10-state cap-and-trade system intended to reduce industrial emissions of carbon dioxide. The most recent Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative auction, held last week, garnered $61.6 million, including $1.7 million for energy conservation projects in Maine.

Seventy-five years ago, a small group of Missourians met in the Tiger Hotel here in Columbia and made history. They organized what became the Conservation Federation of Missouri, which in turn led the charge to pass a historic constitutional amendment establishing the Missouri Department of Conservation as a nonpolitical, professional conservation organization in 1937. The agency became one of the best-organized, professional and envied conservation agencies in the United States. Last month, leading conservation and environmental organizations in Missouri met again to discuss what the next 75 years would look like and how the momentum garnered during the past 75 years could be used as a springboard to the next.

A scaled-down program that will replace the current conservation and generation Business Energy Tax Credits was passed by the Oregon House of Representatives this morning with a vote of 57-2. House Bill 3672 extends the sunset date of the tax credit programs that are designed to support development in the green technology sector in Oregon. The bill's passage comes after many months of lobbying on behalf of renewable energy companies concerned that the end of the credits could slow or stop the momentum of Oregon's clean energy sector.
