Washington -- President Barack Obama's recent speech at the University of Notre Dame has given some abortion opponents hope that they could persuade Obama to keep intact a "conscience clause" for health care workers who refuse to perform abortions because of their religious beliefs. Obama, who addressed graduates at the Catholic university Sunday, spoke in conciliatory terms about abortion, saying he wanted to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and areas of agreement on other issues.

President Obama confronted the emotional issue of abortion Sunday during his speech at the University of Notre Dame. The Catholic school invited the president, who has steadfastly supported abortion rights, to speak at its commencement ceremony, setting up a conflict between secular policy and faith. As is his emerging pattern on such matters, Mr. Obama used the controversy that built in advance of the speech to address the abortion question head-on.
