  • It's all in a name, or so say directors of historical societies throughout the state who are trying to entice the public through their doors. In the past few years, the titles of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the Connecticut Historical Society and the Simsbury Historical Society have been altered to stimulate public interest. We wanted to get the word 'museum' into the title (of the New Haven society) because people did not know if it was a fancy club or something else," said Robert J. Leeney, editor emeritus of the New Haven Register who writes a weekly column often focusing on city history. "Now we hope it will be perfectly understandable to everybody that it is a museum.

  • The Connecticut Irish American Historical Society donated a bench in memory of Tom Slater to the Hamden Farmington Canal Commission. Slater, who lived in Hamden, was the husband of Noreen Slater. He served in the Navy for five years and was employed by Yale University for 38 years.

  • Size clearly matters at the Connecticut Historical Society Museum these days. For its newest exhibit, "Small Things Considered," the museum has selected only the choicest morsels of local history to show, most of them small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand.

  • After a national search, the Louisiana State Museum today announced David Kahn is the new director. Kahn, formerly executive director of the Connecticut Historical Society Museum in Hartford, Mass., will head the Louisiana State Museum's statewide network and is the assistant secretary of the Office of State Museum under the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. Kahn will begin work by May 15.Today's selection of David M. Kahn brings full circle my pledge to find the best director in the country to lead the Louisiana State Museum system, said Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu. When I became lieutenant governor two years ago, I promised to position the State Museum to become a world-class system that would attract national and international visitors and serve as a place that showcases th...

  • BALTIMORE - On an invitingly bright summer day, the reading room at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania starts filling up nonetheless as soon as the doors open: professors, Ph.D. candidates and amateur genealogists alike stream in to spend hours perusing the yellowed letters and faded land records, the presidential papers and everyday ephemera that are stored in the group's vaults. While the staff continues to lend out such historic documents, it is with a warier eye now that the Philadelphia-based archive and others learn that they may have been victims of what investigators say was a veritable national treasure hunt by Barry Landau and Jason Savedoff to steal valuable artifacts.

  • Most history exhibits aren't this emotional. As a rule, they offer data and documentation. They also supply perspective and context for significant events. But they don't make the curators' eyes well up with tears. Usually. "We've had some very emotional days," says Elizabeth Lewis, the lead exhibit developer for "September 11, 2001: Connecticut Responds and Reflects," which will be on view at the Connecticut Historical Society from Sept. 5 to Oct. 1. I've never worked on something like this before," Lewis says. "We realize it's a sensitive topic and we treat it respectfully. We've interviewed family members who lost someone on 9/11, and when they come in, we spend as much time with them as they're willing to give. They deserve that.

  • In a recent article, the North Branford Historical Society said it wanted to save two sites. I would like to clarify some things about one of the sites, North Branford's first gas station and the house on that same property. The "four-room bungalow" is not a bungalow, it is a house. I lived there with the three other members of my family and my dog for six years. The Regional Water Authority notified my family that it didn't want to be in the rental business during midyear 2003 and that we had to relocate. During the next year, my family spoke with the Connecticut Historical Society and it came and said that North Branford's first gas station had lead paint and the lead-abatement would cost too much before it moved it to another property.
