An unannounced compliance inspection of businesses that sell tobacco products last week revealed eight out of 24 city establishments sold items to youth under the age of 18 years old and the clerks were each fined $200, police said. Police spokesman Officer Jeffrey Nielsen said members of the police department, staff members of the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program conducted the inspections.

STRATFORD -- The Stratford Youth and Family Advisory Board is accepting nominations for its annual Youth As Resources Awards, and applications of its annual Youth As Resources grants. Both will be presented Feb. 27. The Stratford Youth and Family Advisory Board has money available through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Erin Marie Babineau Memorial Fund to fund Stratford youth involvement service projects.

The town's Youth and Social Services Division has been awarded a two-year, $80,000 state grant to help continue its fight against underage drinking and substance abuse. The grant was awarded by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, said Michelle Piccerillo, director of youth and social services. It will be used to hire a part-time employee whose job will be to coordinate programs that target underage drinking and substance abuse, as well as to fund programs designed to change the perception of adults in the community regarding those problems, Piccerillo said.
