Cuomo Friday announced that he is nominating Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Joan McDonald to serve as the Empire State's transportation commissioner. In May 2008, she was appointed chairwoman of Connecticut Innovations, an authority that provides development capital to emerging businesses.

  • The U.S. Census Bureau revised its housing figures this month, even as new data published by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development showed a sharp increase between April and July in permits for new housing (see related story on page 23).

  • The number of housing permits issued statewide in April was 51 percent lower than a year ago, marking the eighth consecutive month in which permit activity trailed the previous year, the state Department of Economic and Community Development reported Wednesday. Last month's total also marked a 6 percent drop from March, when 386 were issued.

Connecticut cities and towns authorized 1,283 new housing units, compared with 1,143 in June 2003. In the first half of the year, permits are up 17.9 percent, from 4,598 from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2003, to 5,423 so far this year.

  • By Cara Baruzzi Register Business Editor cbaruzzi@nhregister.com The number of housing permits issued in Connecticut last month sank 72 percent compared with a year ago, according to the state Department of Economic and Community Development, but the year-ago figure was bolstered significantly by permits for New Haven's 360 State Street development.

  • In its first two years, Connecticut's digital media and motion picture tax credit program involved 13 productions and had "a modest impact" on the state's economy, according to a March report from the program's sponsor, the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism. The study by the state Department of Economic and Community Development found the program generated $55.1 million in film production spending, $20.72 million in new real gross state product, 395 full-time equivalent jobs and $6.58 million in new real disposable personal income through multiplier effects.

In the 125 cities and towns the department tracks, 251 housing permits were issued last month, down from the 336 issued in February 2007.
