STAMFORD (AP) -- Police are getting more involved in helping fire officials investigate a fatal Christmas morning fire to gather information about smoke alarms and home renovations. Police Capt. Richard Conklin said unanswered questions remain, although authorities have determined that embers in a bag of discarded fireplace ashes caused the Dec. 25 house fire that killed five people. For example, officials want to know if there were smoke alarms, the status of renovation work in the house and whether the contractor had permits, he said.
The issue of permits could figure in the investigation because the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has said that neither Michael Borcina nor his company, Tiberias Construction Inc., was registered to perform home improvement work in Connect...

A recent trip to a Bay Shore mall turned out to be an expensive one for Rosario Vasquez-Guevara. While walking by the food court with her 13-year-old daughter, Vasquez-Guevara was approached by a young woman with a clipboard who said her daughter looks like she could have a future in modeling.
A few days later, Vasquez-Guevara was called by a representative of New Faces Development Center in Hicksville who convinced her to bring all three of her children in to take some photos. Within a week, New Faces billed Vasquez-Guevara's credit card $10,200 for its services, which amounted to little more than creating photo albums of her kids and posting them to a website.

A potentially contaminated frozen chicken and pasta product that was recalled this week was distributed to BJ's Wholesale stores in Connecticut and other locations, state Department of Consumer Protection officials said Wednesday. Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said all of the recalled product has been taken off shelves and BJ's is working to contact individual customers about the product, which may be contaminated with listeria.
Aliki Foods Inc., based here, recalled Tuesday more than 70,000 pounds of "Aliki Chicken Broccoli Fettuccine Alfredo Made with White Chicken" that was distributed to several Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
