It may have taken this the weekend shooting of an Arizona congresswoman and death of six innocent bystanders -- to prompt what some say should be a retreat from the vitriol governing the nation's political discourse.
As Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords clings to life in an Arizona hospital after a Saturday shooting spree in Tucson, four former Western New York congressmen agreed Sunday that one positive outcome may result. Though all of them say the incident essentially stems from the actions of a mentally deranged young man, they also emphasize that the Giffords shooting and related death of U.S. District Judge John M. Roll should give the nation pause.

That the Democratic Congress completely ignored the wishes of the people regarding health care reform is beyond belief. The cost will be so large that tax hikes and cutbacks across the board is a given. State governments will take a major hit and will need to raise revenue again and again. The federal government continues to spend people's money with total disrespect. They like to sidestep the issue of the medical benefits they receive.
I know my vote come November.

After South Africa's 14 years of de facto single party rule under the African National Congress (ANC), the party of Mandela and of liberation has experienced serious internal divisions over leadership personality, alleged corruption, and ideological conflict. Such divisions led prominent ANC vanguard Mosiua Letoka to officially sever his ties with the ANC and found the Congress of the People (COPE). Letoka, who was the former defense minister and close ally of recently-ousted president Thabo Mbeki, signaled an acute change in atmosphere of South African politics. While some welcome the formation of a new competitive party as a sign of "true democracy" taking root in South Africa, comparison with experiences of other countries shows that the result is often, at best, mixed. What is certa...

WASHINGTON - President Obama will order a "real drawdown" of U.S. forces from Afghanistan starting in July, the White House insisted Monday, a milestone in a long war that is testing the patience of the American people and Congress particularly after the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
Roughly 100,000 U.S. troops are in Afghanistan, three times as many as when Obama took office, and U.S. forces are expected to remain there through 2014.
