  • Then there's the ultra-conservative Iranian daily, Jomhuri Islami, which editorialized [George W. Bush]'s visit to the region as a bunch of "razzmatazz." That's right. A progovernment newspaper in the theocratic Islamic Republic of Iran actually used the word "razzmatazz. We are going to confront Iran's behavior where it threatens us, where it threatens our allies," said State Dept. spokesman Sean McCormack at a press conference. His boss Condoleezza Rice told the Jerusalem Post that "The U.S. is going to defend its interests. It's going to defends its allies." In addition, engaging in provocative behavior during International Atomic Energy Agency head Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei's visit to Iran over the same weekend would be bad timing; the Iranian government isn't that stupid. Then there...

  • He has a 19-year-old son, [Trey, Mo], who is an aspiring rapper with his own 4-year-old son. Trey calls himself "Profit" and participates in a conveniencestore robbery with two friends to get money to produce a demo CD. When Mo learns that [Jack] is dying of cancer, he takes Trey on a long road trip from Baltimore to Los Angeles, where he grew up, to see Jack and say goodbye. A lot happens during the long Escalade ride, including a "drivingwhile-black" confrontation. There is a portion of the novel's inside cover flap description that sticks with me. Like a montage, it describes the trip a reader takes:"...both an in-depth anatomy of black fatherhood and a multigenerational road story that spans rural Mississippi in the '40s, swinging South Central L.A. in the '50s, the soul music scene...

  • Affirming appellant's conviction and sentence for felonious assault on grounds that statements contained in 911 call and in the victim's hospital records were nontestimonial and, as such, their admission did not violate appellant's Sixth Amendment confrontation rights. In addition, there was no prosecutorial misconduct such as would deprive appellant of a fair trial, and there was no cumulative error.

  • Suspended South Hackensack Police Chief Michael Frew was found not guilty Thursday of assaulting and harassing a subordinate. Frew and the other officer, Glenn Evans, gave such starkly divergent accounts of the May 2011 confrontation that there was no way to prove which was true without more substantial evidence, said Judge Roy McGeady, presiding judge of the Bergen County Municipal Court.

  • Bank of New York Mellon Corp. officials watched with apprehension the conflicts between police and Occupy movements across the country in October, fearing a repeat here. • KEITHAPALOOZA It was all about journalistic ethics. Sure. Uh-huh. Some say MSNBC's rapid-fire firing and rehiring of pundit Keith Olbermann was simply a ratings-minded publicity stunt with melodrama right out of "All My Children." There was rebellion, confrontation, bloodletting, punishment, sorrow, drama, chastening, reconciliation, joy, costume changes. Thousands of liberal fans signed the perfunctory instant petition from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee demanding Mr. Olbermann's reinstatement after he was banished "indefinitely" on Friday for contributing campaign funds to three Democrats. The squabble was ramped up on the Internet, social media and the network itself. Media critics pointed out what it all meant. Stories multiplied, buzz ensued.

  • DEAR ABBY: I am a physician and mother who goes to substantial lengths to avoid subjecting my 6-year-old son, "Brandon," to secondhand smoke. My husband and I feel so strongly about it that we let our nanny, "Edith," go because she persisted in smoking around Brandon. (She had stated on her employment application that she was a non-smoker.) Brandon recently returned from a weeklong visit with my in-laws, "Connie" and "Fred," out of state. They are both aware of my concerns regarding secondhand smoke. When they visit us, Connie smokes outside or sneaks smokes in the bathroom. Before we sent Brandon to visit, I explicitly asked Connie not to smoke indoors during his visit, and she agreed.

According to the petition, customers had complained about the co-worker's actions and language.
