SILVER SPRING, Md., Nov. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- After lengthy study and deliberation, a Conflict Resolution Committee of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) released a report today upholding a prior recommendation that the two elderly Asian elephants currently housed at the Detroit Zoo be transferred to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in Columbus, Ohio. There is no further appeal of this recommendation.
This decision supports a previous recommendation by the Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP) that Wanda, 45, and Winky, 51, be transferred to the Columbus Zoo, which has one of the country's largest zoo elephant exhibits and is accredited by the AZA. Schumer-both a member of the Judiciary Committee and chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC)-is pushing hard for the most invasive investigation of the White House possible while, as Sen. Arlen Specter (R.-Pa.) accused, leveraging the information Schumer is obtaining as head of the inquiry to generate fundraising for the DSCC. Schumer argued that the inquiry was justified by different explanations that dribbled out of the White House and Justice Department, Echoing Leahy's demands, Schumer said the conflict requires resolution by testimony under oath before the Judiciary Committee.

The U.S. Olympic Committee board approved a resolution Saturday calling sexual abuse "intolerable and in direct conflict with Olympic ideals," a result of work by a USOC task force that will unveil its findings this week to the Colorado Springs-based organization.
A 10-person team led by former Olympic cross country skier Nina Kemppel is expected to make recommendations Tuesday to the USOC pertaining to streamlined guidelines for 45 national governing bodies to follow in enhancing safe training environments.

DES MOINES - An effort by Iowa lawmakers to change the way the state administers its open records and meetings laws passed a Senate panel Wednesday and appears to have momentum this session thanks to support from Gov. Terry Branstad and others who have called for greater government openness.
The Senate State Government Committee approved the creation of an Iowa Public Information Board to provide training, conflict resolution and formal rulings on the state's open records and meetings laws. Similar efforts have been approved in the Iowa Senate the past three years only to stall in the Iowa House.

KIDRON -- The 42nd annual Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale is slated for Aug. 3-4. Located at Central Christian High School in Kidron, the sale helps fund the efforts of Mennonite Central Committee. MCC is active around the world in disaster relief, development and conflict resolution. The sale is run by volunteer labor and all items are donated, and donations are being accepted.
The activities begin at 4 p.m. on Aug. 3. Quilt and wood displays will be open as well as the needlework, plant and international craft stands. Food stands will be open as well, including barbecue chicken, home-cooked noodles, egg rolls, homemade ice cream and apple dumplings.
