Catholic Church needs to focus on word of God
As a former Catholic, I find the statement by Sr. Regina Murphy: "We're becoming more secular, less religious. It's a societal thing," confirmation that the Catholic Church is distant from Christ's teachings. I left the Church after growing up attending Catholic grade school, actively participating in my college's Newman parish and returning to my parish in Western New York as lector. I attended Mass weekly, and for years I attended daily Mass trying to fill a void in my life.

Wargin, 68, was driving Sklba to St. Andrew Parish in the Town of Leroy where there was a 2 p.m. joint confirmation ceremony with St. Mary of Mayville and Sacred Heart Parish of Horicon, said Gerald Ponec, Wargin's close friend and a deacon at Nativity of the Lord Church in Cudahy.

It's kind of a re-enactment of what happened to Jesus," explained parishioner Joey Mele, 13, a Harborside Middle School student.

I can't say I've run into too many Nazarenes in my life. Nazarenes belong to an evangelical Protestant denomination that was founded in 1908 and affiliated with the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition from the 19th century. They are based in Lenexa, Kan., and have 1.9 million members worldwide, including 769,470 in the United States. People who are - or were raised - Nazarene include Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, politician Gary Hart and author Ann Kiemel Anderson.
But they are not known for focusing on the sacramental, which is why I was surprised to find a recent book by a Nazarene college journalism professor on some of the traditional seven sacraments of the Catholic Church: baptism, confirmation, confession, marriage, ordination, anointing of the sick and last rites.

Dec. 6 is known as St. Nicholas Day in countries throughout the world. It has personal importance to me as well.
When I celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation into the Catholic church nearly 30 years ago, I chose a family friend, Father John Michelak, as my sponsor. The next year, he sent me a birthday card on Dec. 6, which he thought was the date of my birthday. Truthfully, I am born on Christmas Day, not on St. Nicholas Day. Though some have expressed sympathy for my birthday, I love being a "Christmas baby.
