Credit was once defined as "man's confidence in man. But in fact, the definition of credit today is more like "man's confidence in himself."
NEW YORK - With the holiday shopping season about to start, consumer confidence is hovering near the lowest it's been since President Bush's father was commander in chief. It may dip further as Americans open their 401(k) statements and see how much they've lost in the last few weeks. The Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index is now at 59.8. That's up slightly from a revised 58.5 in August and higher than analysts expected.

In his keynote address [William C. Richardson, Ph.D.] pointed out that it is a leader's responsibility to nurture, inspire and mentor other leaders. "It is a joy and opportunity to bring out the potential in others," he said using the analogy that great pitchers need good batters. "People underestimate themselves and their ability and don't think that they are a leader. But we are all called in our own way and time to lead," he said. Richardson serves on the board of directors of the Bank of New York Mellon, CSX Corp., Exelon Corp. and the Kellogg Co. A recent retiree, he has devoted his academic career to research related to the organization and financing of health services in the United States. He has been affiliated with the University of Washington in Seattle, Pennsylvania State Uni...

No pressure. No judgments. Just women out on the town to build self-esteem and make friendships to last a lifetime. That's one of many goals of Curvaceous Cuties, a new Columbia County social club for "plus-size" women. Created by best friends Tomeka Porter-Few, of Martinez, and Lillian Tillman, of Augusta, the club hopes to build larger women's confidence and create a new definition of beauty, all while having a ball doing it.
The main goal of this study is to analyze a sample of self-underwritten Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) where the going public process is conducted without the participation of any investment bank or underwriter at all. We test the hypothesis that the major incentive to self-underwrite is to maximize the proceeds from the IPO.The firms in this study are considered self-underwritten if and only if they explicitly describe their own IPO as such in the registration statement and the prospectus. This definition is completely new, since most previous academic papers have considered as those where the issuer is an investment bank that also participates in its own IPO. The main conclusion of this study is that there are no significant differences on the level of underpri...

Olson expounds the definition of the word security, which is "well-founded confidence." Other definitions mention freedom from danger, risk, care, apprehension, and doubt--individuals are left to fill in specifics. These could include new or deteriorating health conditions, mental anxieties, financial problems, dangerous surroundings, or simply being increasingly fearful of fast-paced, changing world that is filled with complexities and contradictions. He also discusses three keys to security, which include a clear understanding of one's own resources, trusted and reliable sources of information and a thoughtful set of strategies for healthy living.
Hubris. (Hyoo-bris) noun. Excessive pride or self-confidence. Arrogance. That's the dry dictionary definition. But if you want to see hubris in all its gooey partisan glory, check out the machinations Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is going through as he twists and turns like a Chinese acrobat in zero gravity, reacting to the congressional page scandal. His first vault into the Olympics of sleaze was picking up the phone. Why? To express his outrage at Florida Republican Mark Foley's inappropriate overtures to young boys? Unh, no. OK, to console the families of the children ensnared in these lurid imprecations? Well, no, not precisely that either. Then, to demand an investigation into why the report on Foley's behavior was buried by his office? Well, unh, no, no, not really, no....
SOMEHOW Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary definition doesn't quite do it: chutz-pah n. (1892): supreme self-confidence. The synonyms come closer: nerve, gall. But I would add "brazen" and even "appalling." Or maybe that Spanish expletive once used by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
