West Virginia will host the 2014 national Conference of Chief Justices and Conference of State Court Administrators, state Supreme Court Chief Justice Robin Davis announced Wednesday. The annual conference, which generally draws about 150 participants in addition to family members and other attendees, will be held at The Greenbrier resort in July 2014.
State courts across the country are implementing numerous and varied cost-cutting measures - from reducing court hours to implementing furloughs and hiring freezes to consolidating courts -- in response to budget cuts brought on by the economic recession, according to a recent survey. A number of courts have said they are turning to advanced technology as a means to protect the public's access to courts, says the survey conducted by the National Center for State Courts and the Conference of State Court Administrators

Wow! The Gazette did a fine job basically reprinting the Newsweek article on "Lawsuit Hell" in the Dec. 12 editorial. So much of the article was lifted in huge quotes, it is a wonder Newsweek is not threatening to sue. Of course, more than 50 percent of litigations in this country are just that, business suing business. But journalists don't seem to care about those pesky details when looking at the litigation "explosion" out there. Since 1992, there has been a 9 percent decrease in personal- injury lawsuits, according to a 2002 report authorized by the Conference of State Court Administrators, the very folks who monitor the filing of lawsuits of all kinds. Newsweek missed that little tidbit and, in seizing the article as gospel, so did the Gazette.
Daniel Becker, state court administrator for Utah, has received the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) Warren E. Burger Award. Named for the famous former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the award is intended to recognize someone who has made important improvements in court administration, management, education, research or consulting. Becker has been deeply involved with the NCSC and another organization, the Conference of State Court Administrators, to do such things as improve public trust in the court system and create greater understanding of how it works.

Emery examines the article "" by Mary J. Deits and Lora E. Keenan that address the disconnect between the state appellate courts, trial courts, and the public.
