  • OPENING THIS WEEK (3.5 CHILES) BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO In this documentary, director Jessica Oreck starts us off with an examination of Japan's fascination with keeping large insects as pets. She soon covers the country's infatuation with insects from every possible angle, spiraling into subjects such as Japan's culture, history, religion, and identity, as well as its obsession with minimalism and transience. Oreck eschews talking heads and the strict linear narrative of most documentaries, instead offering a scattershot collage of topics and images. It's a must-see for naturalists and Japanophiles. Not rated. 90 minutes. In English and Japanese with subtitles The Screen, Santa Fe. (Robert B. Ker) See review, Page XX.

  • OPENING THIS WEEK chiles CARNIVAL IN THE NIGHT Director Masashi Yamamoto's 1982 film shot in grainy 16 mm with amateur actors portraying abstract sketches of themselves could be considered the Liquid Sky of Japan's first generation of punk rockers: it's vile, anarchic, and nihilistic, and for anyone harboring an ounce of genuine punk ethos, well worth the price of admission. Kumi (Kumiko Ota) leads a double life, raising her son alone while living an existentialist's surreal dream among seedy elements of the punk/New Wave clubs in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. Kumi's fate becomes tied to that of a mad bomber, a gay hustler, a band of rapists, and a psychotic drunk who likes to burn money. 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, only. Q & A with producer Tetsuki Ijichi follows screening. Not rated. 108 minute...

  • OPENING THIS WEEK (3.5 CHILES) BREATHLESS "Modern movies begin here," Roger Ebert has written. "No debut film since Citizen Kane in 1942 has been as influential." The incomparable cool of Jean-Paul Belmondo, the vulnerable toughness of Jean Seberg, and the in-your-face brashness of director Jean-Luc Godard helped launch the French New Wave into movie history. On its 50th birthday, Breathless remains fresh and exciting, although its revolutionary approach has long since been absorbed into the mainstream, and the years do show on it a bit. Not rated. 90 minutes. In French with subtitles. The Screen, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) See Screen Gems, Page XX.

  • Shaun Tuley, serving a life sentence at England's Frankland Prison in County Durham, told the prison newspaper Inside Time that authorities had denied him permission to read books about magic on the grounds of "operational security problems." The tides Tuley had requested "were not thought appropriate," an official of the Prison Service told the BBC News. "I can't understand the Prison Service's attitude," David Beckley of the magicians' organization Magic Circle said, "unless this man has asked for books on escapology. • The hamburger. One of the most egalitarian of all American foods, the hamburger is a staple of the American diet among meat-eating folks. When you need a burger (and admit, you want one right now) you need a burger, and if you're a Santa Fean, you probably need one with all the traditional fixins, (including ketchup and mustard, pickles and onions and a slab of cheese) along with a certain nontraditional and local condiment -- namely, a big scoop or slice of green chile. But think about it for just a second -- when do you need a burger? If you're like me, you need one on a day when you've skipped both breakfast and lunch and you know that a long night lies ahead of you. Or maybe you need one in the middle of day when life is going your way -- or not. There are as many reasons to need a ...
