WOOSTER -- Classical music critics are getting an earful of Jack Gallagher's music, and they are relishing every note. In a feature review posted on National Public Radio's "Deceptive Cadence," Bob McQuiston is the latest to join the chorus by praising Gallagher's recently released CD, "Jack Gallagher: Orchestral Music." McQuiston describes Gallagher as "one of those rare contemporary composers who writes music that's not only intellectually stimulating but also immediately appealing," adding that he finds the opening work "brilliantly orchestrated and impeccably constructed.

The Republican-led House voted Thursday to defund National Public Radio, an organization rocked by a series of embarrassments, most recently an undercover video that showed a fundraising executive disparaging conservatives and saying that the network could do without federal subsidies.
The 228-192 vote on the bill, which was brought to the floor on an emergency basis without hearings, was largely along party lines; all but seven Republicans voted "yes," while no Democrat voted for it.

It was a candidate forum unlike any other: 20 candidates, little partisanship, lots of stories of personal courage, plenty of warm applause.
Thursday night's forum at the Heathman Lodge, sponsored by the Clark County Disability Council, brought out the best in people. And it showed that just about everyone has been touched by the challenge of living with a disability, including most of those in the audience.
