Illinois has the worst gun laws of any state. Only police officers and the taxpayer-funded bodyguards for ex-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley have the right to carry a handgun outside their homes. Everyone else is out of luck - unless a pair of federal lawsuits filed last week succeed in arguing that the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear Arms" means that people can actually bear arms in the land of Lincoln.
Last year, the Supreme Court struck down Chicago's ban on private handgun ownership, upholding the "keeping" of arms. The National Rifle Association (NRA) and Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) are looking to build on that victory by overturning the country's most sweeping anti-carry statute to ensure the "bearing" of arms is equally protected.

David McDowall, Colin Loftin and Brian Wiersema err in their conclusion that liberalization of Florida's gun ownership law did not deter violent crime. Liberalization of concealed carry laws can and in Florida has gone along with a falling homicide rate. Making it easier to protect oneself helps the common security.

If Green Bay gun dealer Eric Thompson had his way, college students would carry more than just books.
In his vision, the next college shooter is thwarted by a student armed with one of Thompson's guns -- averting a massacre, saving lives.

The New York Times began a profile of Caroline by quoting an average citizen who "turns almost maternally protective" upon hearing Caroline's name, mentioning the assassination of her father-nearly half a century ago. In a comprehensive study of all public multiple shooting incidents in America between 1977 and 1999, economists John Lott and Bill Landes found that the only public policy that reduced both the incidence and casualties of such shootings were concealed-carry laws.

Wasting time on ideological rigor
Reps. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, and R. Frelinghuysen, R-Harding, voted yes for HR-822 to make it easier for persons to carry concealed loaded handguns in their out-of-state travel. It preempts any strict laws in other states. Also, they voted no to an amendment to prohibit terrorists, stalkers, pedophiles and other perpetrators from receiving authority to carry concealed guns across state lines.

This is in response to the Sun Journal editorial printed Aug. 16, "Open-carry puts shoppers on edge.
The whole reason that there are concealed-carry laws on the books is because people would carry concealed weapons if they were going to commit crimes. This is also the reason why there aren't open- carry laws in states; because when a person carries openly, they are blatantly stating that they are not a criminal.

Clear up half-truths about concealed carry
I have recently seen to the editor in support of the concealed carry weapon - CCW - laws that the Illinois Legislature is considering. Some of these state that 48 states in the United States offer concealed carry, and only Illinois and Wisconsin deny citizens that right. There are a few half-truths to these statements that I would like to see corrected.

Most states responding to a demand for improved public safety, issue gun licenses that permit individuals to carry concealed weapons. Although some require the licensee to have a legitimate need for the weapon, most require only a lawful purpose, such as self-defense. The impact of "concealed carry" laws on employer liability for workplace violence should concern every business. Concern about such violence undoubtedly affects employee productivity adversely. Employers should implement appropriate deterrent measures to decrease workplace violence's likelihood.
