CLASH OF THE TITANS
The aftermath of the Standard & Poor's downgrade of America has become melodramatic, bombastic and intensely politicized. Dire claims that America's exceptionalism is at an end have surfaced, along with partisan vilification. Consider that the words "tea party downgrade" have appeared in nearly 5,000 news accounts in the past 24 hours, according to a Google News count. It's going to get noisier as global critics join in the America's-going-down dance. But take a calm breath, please.

Crime reduction
There are two sides to the concealed weapons carry bill. On one side is an infringement on states' rights. On the other side is avoiding a potential problem if traveling through several states and not knowing the latest individual law. The claim that mostly relatives are shot in the home is from an unsubstantiated remark made in the '60s and has never held up to scrutiny. We have had dramatic declines in confrontational crimes with a very strong correlation to increased gun ownership and concealed carry licenses. It is strongest in states with easier or no restrictions on concealed carry.

Some states would like to remove the words "bear arms" from the right to "keep and bear arms," but the plain fact is that self- defense - and the right to have access to an effective means of self- defense - is protected by the Constitution, and that protection does not end at your front door. The good news is that the House recently passed a bill, H.R. 822, that would require the 49 states that issue concealed-carry permits to honor all state permits. If this bill becomes law, it would be an important step in the right direction and would help women protect themselves against violence while traveling. What exactly does a concealed-carry permit allow? It merely gives permission to the permit holder to carry a firearm concealed on his person. That's it. It means that a mom can carry a ha...
