Budget panel advances several measures The Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee voted on the following proposals Thursday: - It advanced Walker's plan to freeze a tax-cut program for poor people. The committee voted along party lines to freeze income eligibility under the homestead tax credit at the current level rather than allow it to go up with inflation. The credit goes to homeowners and renters who earn less than $24,500 per year. - Property taxes would essentially be frozen for the next two years as Walker proposed, but would be allowed to increase slightly after that under a plan passed by the committee. - It voted to inject $5 million into a trust fund that pays for veterans-assistance programs. Under Walker's budget proposal, the fund faced a $3.7 million shortfall...

AUGUSTA -- A bill that would allow concealed weapon permit holders to bring their handguns into the State House and nearby areas has won approval from the Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
The panel voted 7-4 last week to pass an amended version of LD 692, a bill sponsored by Rep. Dale Crafts, R-Lisbon.

Some states would like to remove the words "bear arms" from the right to "keep and bear arms," but the plain fact is that self- defense - and the right to have access to an effective means of self- defense - is protected by the Constitution, and that protection does not end at your front door. The good news is that the House recently passed a bill, H.R. 822, that would require the 49 states that issue concealed-carry permits to honor all state permits. If this bill becomes law, it would be an important step in the right direction and would help women protect themselves against violence while traveling. What exactly does a concealed-carry permit allow? It merely gives permission to the permit holder to carry a firearm concealed on his person. That's it. It means that a mom can carry a ha...

MADISON, Wis. - Tens of thousands of people downloaded permit applications within hours of Wisconsin's new concealed carry law taking effect Tuesday, underscoring gun enthusiasts' pent-up frustration over years of waiting for authorization to carry hidden weapons.
Forty-eight other states already allow some form of concealed carry. Debate has raged for years in Wisconsin over whether allowing hidden weapons would make people safer or lead to more violence, but Republicans finally passed a law this summer allowing the practice. Tuesday was the first day state residents could apply for a permit.

A growing number of state governments are tightening the reins on databases involving concealed weapon permits, making it nearly impossible for reporters to uncover information potentially vital to the public's interest. The result of this detailed work was the "Licensed to Carry" series, which won numerous awards, including three from SPJ's South Florida Pro Chapter's 2008 Sunshine State Awards: the James Batten Award for Public Service; the Gene Miller Award for Investigative Reporting in the large newspaper division; and first place in the social policy reporting category.

Richmond | Guns in the state Capitol? No problem. // Guns in public libraries? Bring 'em on. // But there's one line that Virginia's famously gun-friendly legislature apparently is not ready to cross. For now, at least, it will remain impossible to get a concealed-weapon permit to carry a machine gun. // That's what Del. Jackson Miller's bill, HB2386, would have allowed . It failed to advance out of a House of Delegates subcommittee Thursday and so is likely dead for this legislative session. // It was the annual meeting of the Militia, Police and Public Safety panel to deal with gun-related legislation, and, as usual, gun-rights enthusiasts and gun-control advocates faced off on every measure with no middle ground. // For the most part, as usual, ...

SPRINGFIELD - Carrying a concealed weapon will remain against the law in the Land of Lincoln following another failed attempt to bring Illinois in line with gun laws in 48 other states.
In action Thursday, the latest proposal to legalize concealed weapons fell a handful of votes short of the 71 needed for passage in the Illinois House. Defeat of the measure came a day after Gov. Pat Quinn said he'd veto the measure if it landed on his desk.
