Subsection (e)(12) of the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, (5 U.S.C. 552a) requires agencies to publish advance notice of any proposed or revised computer matching program by the matching agency for public comment. The DoD, as the matching agency under the Privacy Act is hereby giving notice to the record subjects of a computer matching program between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and DoD, Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) that their records are being matched by computer. The purpose of this agreement is to verify an individual's continuing eligibility for VA benefits by identifying VA disability benefit recipients who return to active duty and to ensure that benefits are terminated if appropriate.

Federal regulators revealed Tuesday that they believe a faulty computer program led them not to send Massey Energy a "pattern of violations" warning letter late last year for the company's Upper Big Branch Mine, where 29 workers died in a massive underground explosion last week.
S. Mine Safety and Health Administration officials said the computer system, in use since 2007, missed eight "unwarrantable failure" enforcement orders, any one of which would have placed Upper Big Branch in line for the MSHA warning letter.

The Central Community School Board has received information from a representative from Apple Computers concerning a 1:1 computer program for the school.
Although the board has not decided how many classes would be involved in the program, which would give each student a laptop computer to use for courses, a preliminary cost estimate was $400,000, payable over a four-year period, for grades six through 12. The program also includes professional development training.
