The Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing has selected Arley Carpenter of Nitro as Employee of the Month for December. Carpenter serves as RCBI director of manufacturing services, working out of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in South Charleston. Prior to joining RCBI in 1997, Carpenter served four years as general manager of Mountaineer Archery, Inc. in Huntington, where he introduced CNC (computer-numerical-controlled) machining to the manufacturing of compound bows.

The City of Evansville was prepared to chip in $200,000 for a new training center and local officials were helping to arrange the lease of the OneStar building, 7100 Eagle Crest Blvd., in an attempt to land Sikorsky Helicopter Engineering and Design facility, said Ken Robinson, executive director of Vision-e, Evansville's economic development agency.
In the end, however, Sikorsky and its engineering subcontractor, Butler International, opted to locate at the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, Ind. A key problem for Evansville officials was the company's desire to have engineers trained in particular computer assisted design and manufacturing skills -- a training that was already being done at Purdue University.
