Inside a nondescript building on Forum Boulevard, Jay Stewart III and his staff at Stewart Dental Laboratory use state-of-the-art computer equipment to create crowns, bridges, implants and other prosthetics for dental patients all over the country. Stewart Dental Laboratory, 2620 Forum Blvd., has managed to keep its competitive edge in the dental restoration business by adapting to the latest technological advancements, Stewart said, which is why it is the only lab in the state - and one of the few in the country - that uses a computer-assisted design and machining system to create prosthetics.
One of the more important new developments for homeowners planning to remodel or renovate is the growing use of in-home "computer-assisted design" programs that help visualize what a finished project will look like. Computer Assisted Design (CAD), as it relates to homeowners, was first put into play by manufacturers wanting to show how their building products and materials might look on a home. Architects also used it to speed up designs and blueprints.
Two 2011 graduates from Eisenhower High School took home top honors at the national Technology Students Association competition in Dallas, Texas, at the end of June. Jacob Schwehr and Mark Lavis won first and second place, respectively, in the TSA's Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) Architecture category.
Digital Mettle: Jewelry and Objects of CAD," at the National Ornamental Metal Museum through Sept. 11, is an exhibition as confounding as it is beguiling, as confusing as it is benign but ultimately is a harbinger of the future for arts and crafts. Curated by Matthew Hollern, professor of jewelry and metals and dean of faculty at The Cleveland Institute of Art, "Digital Mettle" - a lovely pun - delves into recent movements that focus on CAD or Computer Assisted Design for creating forms of "jewelry" that are as much statements about how and why they were made than they are bijoux for adornment.
ALSC has worked with Orlando, Fla.-based Conventional Wisdom Corp. on the envisioned expansion, which eventually could include up to 200,000 square feet of new exhibit space, 85,000 square feet of added meeting rooms, 25,000 square feet of new ballroom space, and nearly 1,400 additional parking spaces. The recent recession-related slowdown in the design pipeline is giving ALSC's architects and designers time to train on a new building-information modeling system called, Revit, which provides some of the latest advancements in computer-assisted design software, Hall says.
After the initial investment in geothermal, the major operating cost is the electricity to run the heat pumps and compressors, which [John Manning] describes as a "refrigerator on steroids." Geothermal can save as much as 40 percent over your usual National Grid bill. "If it costs you $1,500, geothermal will cost you, say, $1,000. That's with natural gas; if you heat with propane it can save you 50 percent. The nice tiling about geothermal is that it also does air conditioning." The same system that brings you warm air from the Earth in winter sends your warm summer air down into the Earth and cools it off. The high costs of installation (an average home system runs about $7,500) are driving people wishing to deploy geothermal toward "community loops," which involve one geothermal field...
