Among the most serious information security threats are failing to consistently apply patches to systems and spear phishing attacks, in which a hacker sends an e-mail to a federal employee asking for personal, sensitive network information such as a user name and password. Chances are your agency already has been hit by such an attack. If not, it is only a matter of time before it happens. Here are steps that information security managers can take include: 1. Make sure programmers have the skills to write computer code that is so tight it can deter computer attacks. 2. Test new applications with a Web security device. 3. Be sure contracts with integrators include a specific clause for validating computer systems. 4. Test systems with fake attacks. 5. Vet every bit of data in your system.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) proposed to amend its energy conservation standards for several classes of commercial heating, air-conditioning, and water-heating equipment and to adopt new energy conservation standards for computer room air conditioners in a January 2012 notice of proposed rulemaking (January 2012 NOPR). The levels that DOE proposed to adopt were equivalent to the efficiency levels contained in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/ American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)/Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Standard 90.1-2010 (ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010). In addition, DOE proposed in the January 2012 NOPR to update the current Federal test procedures, or for certain equipment types adopt ne...

Cable and Wireless conducts test - Technology Information Cable and Wireless testing of ATM as a replacement for frame relay in a trans-Atlantic trial indicates that ATM outperforms the other protocol. The test involved connecting Tandem Computer's customer support applications in Europe to the company's databases in its Austin, TX headquarters. When the connection was made over frame relay, transmission delays occasionally caused the network to time out, dropping the customer's query before it was answered. ATM encountered no such problems. ATM drastically reduced the amount of time use to transfer data needed to reconfigure the servers. A 1.75GB file that used to require 14 hours to transfer with frame relay took under two hours with ATM. Cable and Wireless ran the trial over a T3 li...
