This Portland, Ore.-based crew can be most easily labeled as an indie/electronica hybrid. The drawn-out, near-whiney vocals coupled with layers of classic indie rock sounds and eerie electronic tones make this band easily comparable to uberfamous Radiohead. In fact, "Karma Police" and "Fake Plastic Trees" could play right alongside Housefire without missing a beat. Listeners can expect well-crafted (although occasionally indecipherable) lyrics from Housefire.

It's a little after 1 a.m. on a muggy July night in downtown Raleigh, and The Pour House is quiet again. [Tom Bombadil]'s gaggle of groupies-15 energetic, giggling young women in Duke T-shirts and flowing skirts-has left the building. The bartender yells "last call," and a handful of grown men gather around the bar to swallow final bits of beer. But the boys of Bombadil barely notice: They're too busy packing up their equipment-two keyboards, a drum kit, guitars, kazoos, bells and guitar pedals-to care about beer. In fact, one of the band members isn't old enough to drink.
That's true: Bombadil is finally getting some exposure in its Triangle home and across the country. The band is receiving some serious rotation on Raleigh's WKNC and Chapel Hill's WXYC since the release of its debut E...

Governmental hostility between Cuba and the United States gave certain cultural functionaries the excuse to reject rock as a way to show their "patriotism," to "safeguard national culture" from "foreign, noisy and scandalous beats" and to protect our "helpless youth" - the same young people who were dancing to rock in the countryside and in factories while building socialism - from the "ideological diversionism" represented by this "dangerous music of the enemy.
Influences like Nueva Trova, the occasional visit by foreign rock groups (including the socialist camp), and the constant imitation of Anglo-Saxon rock set the terms for the Cuban rock explosion that came in the 'Sos. Festivals such as "Caliente" at the Casa de Cultura in the upscale Havana neighborhood of Playa (which continue...

For close to a year now, I have worked as Boise Weekly's music editor. It's been an amazing experience and I have met some outstanding people. And even though I listen to and write about music from all over the world, my main focus has always been local music. This exploration of music in and around the Treasure Valley is an important part of Boise Weekly's philosophy so this year we're presenting what we hope will become an annual event: the .
To bring this first night to a brilliant end, [DJ Art Hodge] takes the stage last but certainly not least. He's also a stand-out in his field. Beyond the fact that he's an award-winning DJ, he's the kind of performer you'll never get tired of hearing. His sets are always enjoyable from beginning to end and wi...

At one point Driscoll's narrator sang about a secret- a disgusting, nasty secret diat she ate and threw up, and when she looked into the puke and saw herself, "There was truth." Where 837 Venice Blvd. was an intimate trio, Mad in me triples those numbers, taking the first piece's mode of one person trying on successive identities and multiplying it into a labile mob mentality.
