Park Electrochemical Corp. on Thursday said it broke ground on its Advanced Composite Materials facility in Newton, Kan. Melville-based Park said the new manufacturing facility, which will operate inside the Newton City/County Airport, will be used to make composite materials for aircraft structures and components. The location was chosen because of its proximity to several major aircraft manufacturers, the company said in a statement.

DAYTON -- The University of Dayton Research Institute's newest multi-year assignment for the Air Force involves developing and testing hybrid and advanced composite materials that could serve multiple functions in next-generation military aircraft. UDRI researchers will guide work with materials that could withstand extreme temperatures, conduct heat to remove it from sensitive electronic equipment and serve as sensors to self- diagnose deterioration in materials within aircraft structures. The materials, in some cases, could store energy and be more lightweight than conventional aircraft materials, reducing the plane's weight and allowing the carrying of more cargo.
