  • Depending on the condition of your patio, as well as your time, energy, goals and budget, you can decide on the extent of improvements you're willing to undertake. Raking off leaves and hosing off the bricks, pavers or planks, as well as picnic tables, is the minimum requirement. Replacing broken pots and rickety furniture might be the next order of business. After that, a good quick fix would be to put colorful plants in several containers of varions sizes. There are also limitless options for some non-living . accessories such as globes, seashells, lanterns and pieces of sculpture. Scour your storeroom for long-forgotten pieces that you can recycle for outdoor use. What about color schemes? It depends on your yard and your home's appearance. • For their first task, the contestants were asked to design the New York townhouse in which they temporarily live. They all got right to work showing how tasteful they are - all except my favorite contestant, Ramona. While the others worried about complementary colors and appropriate accents, Ramona headed to the street to scavenge junk. She came back with a ratty vacuum cleaner, smeared it with putty, and called it "sculpture." The judges were horrified, and I'm already feeling wistful about the HGTV show that might have been: "Home Putty Solutions with Ramona. I hate to halt the march of science, but haven't these people seen "The Twilight Zone" or "Star Trek"? If the probe burrows into the ice and releases bloodthirsty aliens bent on destroying the human race, don't blame me. I've ha...

  • Cohoon discusses some ways on how to experiment with gardens using various color techniques. She offers several tips to achieve the design including choosing a single hue for a simplicity, choosing two complementary colors to provide the most dramatic contrasts, and experimenting with multi-colored flowers and foliage to end up with a bold garden or a mellow one.

At work, blazers work well with slacks or a skirt. Just make sure they're in complementary colors. When shopping for a blazer, chose a neutral color and a fabric that will keep you fairly warm.

  • A passage from Henry David Thoreau's 1864 book The Maine Woods could easily describe [McNeice]'s pastel of the same title - and, for that matter, several other pieces in the show. Thoreau wrote, "The vision I have in my mind's eye, still, is of the small, dark, and sharp tops of tall fir and spruce trees, and pagoda-like arbor-vitæs, crowded together on each side, with various hard woods, intermixed." McNeice's pastel has the same elements, but with more color, including a forest floor blanketed with raw-sienna pine needles. [Targan]'s "Still Life with Swiss Chard" and "Still Life with Cauliflower" are similarly composed canvasses with vertical and horizontal axes near the center of each. • Shows by so-called "emerging" artists are often filled with undeveloped ideas and brash experiments. Such is not the case with "Masterworks," currently on view at BigTown Gallery in Rochester, Vt. This is a dynamic exhibition showcasing six of New England's most distinguished, mature artists - the youngest painter in the group was born in 1930. The works, however, are fairly recent; all but two pieces were created since 2000. The "masters" - Pat Adams, William Bailey, Bernard Chaet, Lois Dodd, Paul Resika and Steve Trefonides - have Tésumés laced with extensive honors and lifetimes of major exhibitions. A group exhibition by these accomplished artists in central Vermont is a major event. Chaet creates layers with heavy scumbling. The 30-by-30-inch "June, Early" of 2004 is an abstract la...
