In virtually every for-profit industry, stiff competition breeds economic efficiency. Success hinges on producing more goods or services at a lower cost without compromising quality - that is, on increasing productivity. The classic example of the benefits of productivity gains is Henry Ford's adoption of the assembly line, an innovation that allowed his company to build more reliable cars at a faster pace and at a lower cost - transforming the automobile from a plaything for the wealthy to an everyday tool for ordinary Americans.
