ORLANDO, Fla. - A judge ruled Monday that Casey Anthony is competent to remain on trial for murder in the death of her 2-year- old daughter after her own lawyers questioned her mental health. Anthony's attorneys told the judge they did not believe she was competent. They said that assessment was based on their privileged communication with her but did not elaborate in a motion filed Saturday and sealed until the judge ruled Monday.

Also on the 29th day of testimony, Anthony's attorneys asked Judge Belvin Perry to declare a mistrial and select a new jury, citing a ruling on Florida's death penalty. Attorneys told the judge they did not believe their 25-year-old client is competent, based on privileged discussions with her. They did not elaborate what led them to that conclusion in a motion filed Saturday and sealed until the judge's ruling.

Dr. Lishan Wang is intelligent, focused on his legal defense and competent to stand trial in the shooting death of Dr. Vajinder Toor, a Superior Court judge ruled Monday. Faced with two opposing conclusions on Wang's competency, Judge Roland Fasano based his decision on Wang's behavior in court, his background and his statements to a defense-hired psychiatrist, as well as to a team from the Whiting Forensic Division of Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown.
WASHINGTON | A man accused of firing shots at the White House in an attempt to kill President Barack Obama is competent to stand trial, according to a preliminary psychiatric screening. But federal prosecutors filed a motion Monday requesting more extensive tests if his mental health becomes an issue. An evaluation by a court- appointed psychiatrist found that Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez is competent to understand the proceedings against him and to help with his defense, according to the prosecutors' motion. Ortega, 21, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is accused of using an assault rifle to fire up to nine shots at the White House on Nov. 11.
