With sales forces feeling the pinch from physicians, Merck is turning to technology to realize efficiencies and help reps hit their targets. The firm has deployed tablet PCs to 5,000 of its 8,000 reps, placing it in the vanguard of companies seeking to upgrade, not downsize, their sales forces. According to Mark Bard, president of Manhattan Research, reps remain by far the most effective means of delivering information to doctors, but other approaches are needed as well. Merck has also developed MerckMedicus.com, a Web site featuring a suite of research tools. It offers the company an opportunity to burnish its corporate brand and build a relationship with physicians while fulfilling its high standards of service to the industry. Lassota, now 51, is divisional vice president of imaging biology and oncology at Caliper Life Sciences, a biotech company headquartered in rural Hopkinton, Mass., which develops and manufactures automated research tools for proteomics, genomics, and drug discovery and development laboratories. Thinking that the funding environment might be more hospitable in industry, Lassota took a senior researcher position at American Cyanamid, but quickly learned that conducting research in the corporate realm presents other challenges. Lassota is also the driving force behind Caliper's evolving role as a contract research organization (CRO), using his Alameda laboratory to support the biological side of drug discovery with corporate partners.

All too often, leaders ask to communicate a specific set of messages, and employees dutifully run off to disseminate that information very creatively. In order to develop the right message tracks, and to know what needs to be measured during your change process, it's best to start with qualitative employee research. Once you've identified the real key messages that employees will need in order for the company to see change, you can develop your quantitative research tools to track how uptake of those messages is increasing.
